Woodcut of a witch trial

Interactive Graphs

This graph compares the numbers of accused witches in each marital status category between 1560 and 1740. This graph shows only those cases with a known marital status. We do not know the marital status of the vast majority of witchcraft suspect. The records tell us a marital status for only 19% of the accused witches. It is possible that accused witches whose husbands were alive and present at trial were more likely to have their marital status recorded. If so, the proportions of married women to single and widowed women presented in this graph should not be extrapolated to suggest that a similar proportion was the case in those accused witches for whom we do not know marital status.
